1818 Thomas Mayne Reid, novelist and adventurer, was born on April 4, 1818, in Ballyroney, County Down, Ireland.
I never do this, but you really must click through to read Thomas Reid’s full story, because it’s a whopper!! He ran a school in Ballyroney, then sailed for America, where he found a job as a corn factor but was fired for refusing to whip the slaves. He worked his way to St. Louis, writing all the while, and headed up the Missouri River with John James Audubon. And we haven’t even gotten to his Texas period yet!
Reid enlisted in the First New York Volunteer Infantry to join in the Mexican War, during which he filed reports to the St. Louis Spirit of the Times. They landed in Vera Cruz. Reid was injured in the battle at Chapultepec and on September 16 was promoted to first lieutenant. That’s Mexico Independence Day, by the way, celebrating their liberation from the Spanish in 1810. Tough decades for the Mexicans!
Turns out he didn’t really have a Texas period, although he set many of his novels — written in London — in Texas. The 1850s were his most productive period. There’s more — much more. Ya gotta read the whole thing!
1983 The space shuttle Challenger set out with a four-member crew, including Donald H. Peterson and F. Story Musgrave, that completed the first shuttle spacewalk.
