Yesterday’s news

1835        Gen. Martín Perfecto de Cos marched from Goliad. Goliad, known before 1829 as La Bahía,  had immense strategic importance, since it guarded the supply line from the coast to San Antonio. This is a Goliad— the story of the battles around Goliad — but we know it ends. The gringos won.

1930        The East Texas Oilfield is discovered. Located in central Gregg, western Rusk, southern Upshur, southeastern Smith, and northeastern Cherokee counties in the east central part of the state, it is the largest and most prolific oil reservoir in the contiguous United States. The photograph below is of Spindletop.
